What is a UID Card?

The Aadhaar UID Card, developed by the Unique Identification Authority of India in 2009 is available to all permanent residents of India. The UID card will be a single source of identity verification and will help eliminate the problem of fake passports and other common forms of identity cards. The card can also act as a bank account, passport, driving license, and more. 
The data that will be collected from the Aadhaar UID card enrollment process will give the government new and more accurate information on residents. It will allow government departments to coordinate investments and share information as well as enable direct benefit programs.
